Vejer de
la Frontera
Vejer de la Frontera
Vejer de la Frontera, is a breathtakingly beautiful
town perched on top of a steep hill, a very typical and very
authentic town for this region. It's about 15 km from Cadiz.
The white houses are crowded on this small
mountaintop and from the castle on the very top you will have
a beautiful panoramic view of the whole area. Vejer is only
minimally affected by tourism.
Vejer is a perfect example of Arab/Andalusian
Architecture. It is declared a protected area of historical/artistic
interest. Although it was captured from the Moors by Fernando
III el Santo seven centuries ago, it has not lost any of its
Arab features.
The town is a framework of sloping, narrow
streets - some of which even have handrails so that one can
go down them safely -with gleaming white walls that have been
made thicker after centuries of applying whitewash.
There are entrance halls, walls with jasmine
spreading over them, patios that seem more like gardens. It
is a favoured area for the practise of gliding, being only
9 km from the coast, it is also known for its beaches and
underwater fishing and surfing.
