Mojácar
Mojacar
This spectacular Moorish fortress town stands
on a towering crag overlooking a shore graced by pristine
beaches and the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean, which
has a curious distinction all of its own.
American cartoonist Walt Disney is said to
have been born here, before immigrating with his parents to
the United States. The area around Vera and Mojacar is situated
on the Costa de Almeria, which is in the southeastern part
of Spain. With dream scenery it is one of the best-kept secrets
around.
Like many other villages in southeastern Spain,
in the 1960's Mojacar had become a ghost town, since most
of its active inhabitants had moved north to find work in
the factories of the Barcelona region, and further a field.
To attract new residents, the town's mayor
gave land away to anyone who promised to build, and within
a year picturesque Mojacar had become a thriving art colony.
Mainstream tourists and holidaymakers were also later attracted
by the beauty and charm of the place and the following decades
The typical white villages fit perfectly into
the surroundings. A breathtaking views along the coastline,
with its endless beaches around 10 km long. Directly south
of Mojacar the nature reserve called "Cabo de Gata"
starts with its heavenly Mediterranean bays. European Westerns
are filmed close by for example in "Desierto de Tabernas".
Around the area of Mojacar and Vera there are
5 golf courses under construction, one that is partially playable,
two in an advanced state of construction with the others due
to start in the near future.
Road access is excellent in this area, and
to get to the International Airport of Almeria takes approximately
45 minutes.
Restaurants and the opportunity to shop are
well catered for. The real estates of the region are still
among the most favourable priced. It is only a question of
time before the Costa Almeria is awakened from its sleep.
