Benicarlo
Moving further south from Tortosa, we reach
Benicarlo, which has a fishing port, as well as excellent
beaches, which stretch as far as those of neighbouring Peñiscola.
A coast road links both towns. Benicarlo has
a Parador located just a short distance form the beach, and
at Peñiscola there is another one known as La Hosteria
del mar.
Local cooking at Benicarlo depends in the main
on the natural resources provided by the fishing fleet that
brings in its catch every afternoon.
The tourist area between Benicarlo and
Peñiscola is such that the visitor will find it difficult
to know where one town ends and the other begins. The latter
is one of the treasures of the Costa del Azahar, serving as
a permanent historical reminder of the exploits of Papa Luna
(Pope Benedict XIII).
