Tarragona
Tarragona, a city located in the North Eastern
portion of the Iberian Peninsula, is the southernmost provincial
capital of Catalunya. Its mild climate, with an average temperature
of its broad and clean beaches of fine sand, and its significant
artistic and architectural heritage make Tarragona one of
the Europe's main tourist attractions. Perfectly connected
to Europe and the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, it enjoys
the services of two airports, one located just 7 km. away
and the other, Barcelona's international airport, just 90
km. away. Its seaport is one of the most bustling on the Mediterranean.
In addition, Tarragona straddles the meeting-point of two
Spain's most important motorways: the Mediterranean Motorway,
linking Alicante with the French border and the rest of Europe,
and the Northern Motorway, which links Tarragona with Madrid
and the Basque Country.
Tarragona
is a city that is open to the sea, with a seaport that is
among the most important on the Mediterranean as well as a
large fishing port. Its 15 km of coastline boast long beaches:
"Milagro", "Rabassada" and "Playa
Larga", all with fine sand and smoothly sloping into
the sea, with marvellous tiny coves sheltered by rocky outcroppings
and dotted by green Mediterranean pines groves. Noteworthy
among these coves are: "Capellans", "Tamarit"
and "Calabecs".
A city with a true maritime vocation, blessed
with such a mild and pleasant climate, is ideal for the practice
of all sports, especially water sports: sailing, windsurfing,
rowing, waterskiing, scuba-diving...the facilities and equipment
for all these available at the City's Nautical Club or the
Maritime Club, located on Playa Larga. Tarragona also offers
tennis, squash and badminton courts, indoor and outdoor swimming
pools, golf courses, gymnasiums, athletics tracks, sports
complexes, all the necessary facilities to enjoy your leisure
time in sporting fashion. The city's surroundings offer all
hikers and nature lovers the possibility of visiting monuments
of unsurpassed beauty like: "El Pont del Diable"
aquaduct or the "Medol" quarry, just a short hike
or bicycle trip from the city centre.
A maritime and fishing city, Tarragona, capital
of a province graced with excellent wines, also boasts a wonderful
cuisine based on the riches of the sea. "Romesco"
and "Rossejat" are among the typical dishes, which
cannot go without tasting, which visitors can find in any
of the city's numerous restaurants.
Tarragona has become an important and prosperous
commercial hub, with modern establishment offering visitors
the possibility of a selective and a pleasant shopping experience.
Shopping in its pedestrian-only shopping districts becomes
a pleasant stroll through a city full of light. Tarragona
is, in short, an open city awaiting you. The Romans already
spoke of her thus: "...The city was enchanting for its
hospitality, I think that it is a most pleasant place for
repose. Its inhabitants, honourable, kind and orderly, are
not wont to latch onto a visitor's neck as soon as they see
them; they first appraise him and then welcome him hospitality."
