Calafell

Around 2,500 years ago, the current town of Calafell was inhabited by a group of Iberians who constructed an authentic fortress between the current centres of Calafell and Segur to defend themselves from their enemies. The arrival of the Romans put an end to the Iberian culture.

The agricultural and maritime richness of Calafell has been taken advantage of for time immemorial. Here the Romans built a villa - Vilarenc - that contains two large water cisterns, which are still very well preserved.

The middle Ages saw the construction of the Calafell castle on a hill overlooking the present centre of town as well as the hermitage in Segur dedicated to St. Michael. The maritime character of Calafell has also been so crucial that, at the beginning of this century, fishermen had a lifeboat, which sent out to sea on certain occasions.

With five kilometres of fine sand, the coast is flat and the water warm, rich in iodine, clean and very shallow. The sunrises over the sea are blue-toned and the sunsets warm... both are spectacular and beg to be photographed.

The smile of the sea permeates everyone: the children building their sand castles, the young people playing sports, the tranquillity of couples and older folk who enjoy captivating atmosphere one breathes in this place.

Calafell offers a number of facilities that enables everyone to practice the sport that they most enjoy such as Tennis, basketball, golf, miniature golf as well as any kind of water sport. The resort also has a modern multi-sport pavilion and an attractive sport harbour.

A number of festivals are celebrated in the street throughout the year for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors. The parade of the of the Three Kings for the Epiphany, the holiday of the "Three Turns", the Main Winter Festival.

Also the international meeting of Harley Davidsons, the Commercial, Tourism and Gastronomic Fair; the three Town Festivals, St. Peter's in the Maritime Quarter, St. Creu in the town and St. Michael's in the heart of Segur and, finally, the "Christmas Park".

Calafell offers the opportunity to sample a rich gastronomy. There are numerous restaurants serving an international cuisine and gourmets can also delight themselves with typical local dishes such as "fideuà" or a variety of fish from the area seasoned in the sailor's style.
