Sitges
Few resorts can boast the privileges of Sitges;
a breath-taking landscape, seventeen beaches that stretch
along four kilometres of coastline, well sheltered by Garraf
massif, a full cultural life and busy festive calendar, first
rate tourist facilities and its own dazzling light.
These are just some of the reasons why Sitges
has earned international prestige. Its microclimate (more
than 300 sunny days in the year) and its prime location (fifteen
minutes from Barcelona airport and twenty from the city) make
it one of the Mediterranean, where you can be sure of finding
priceless peace and quiet but at the same time, can enjoy
the bustling atmosphere of a cosmopolitan centre.
Visitors seeking culture will find plenty to
satisfy them in Sitges. The town's three museums form one
of the country's most interesting heritage circuits. The intense
cultural life and the organisation of mass events like film,
theatre, music, jazz and tango festivals make Sitges today
a cultural capital of prestige.
Being a fishing town, in a wine growing area,
has been a major factor in the development of quality local
cuisine in which fish and seafood are fundamental. But in
the restaurants a variety of other dishes are available that
are bound to be attractive and interesting to lovers of good
food. The most popular Sitges dish is the "Xato".
Xato is typical for Carnival, and it has been eaten for over
a century. Sitges' most typical drink is "Malvasia de
Sitges" a dessert wine that is produced using traditional
methods.
The full calendar of "fiestas" and
activities leaves no time for boredom in Stiges. More than
thirty events - many of them international - make life one
long fiesta. Perhaps the most outstanding are: Carnival, the
Veteran Car Rally, Corpus Christi (thousands of carnations
cover the streets with floral carpets), Fiesta Major (the
annual town fiesta) and the Grape Harvest Festival.
Regarding sport practice, visitors are able
to choose amongst nautical activities (Sitges has three pleasure
ports: Aiguadolc, Garraf and Port Ginesta), golf (a 18 hole
field), horse riding, tennis, swimming, bicycle promenade,
bowling, visits to the Natural Park Garraf (10,000 hectares
of green), etc. The nightlife in Sitges is unbeatable. Discothèques,
bars, pubs and cafes make Sitges as one of the most fun, vibrant
places on the Mediterranean.
